When these roofs were installed years ago, they were installed over spaced plank decking that allowed the roof to breath naturally from the attic space to the outside. This type of decking installation is typically no longer allowed which has inherently thinned out the remaining cedar shake roofs in the region. Even though the decking installation is now solid sheathing without spaces, some homeowners and businesses have attempted to keep the Denver cedar shake roofing and have installed them over a solidly sheathed surface. This has created problems since the cedar shake roofing originally were designed to breathe and vent naturally.

Cedar shake roofing based shingles are no longer widely accepted as a roofing material and are commonly replaced with tile, metal, composites or high grade asphalt shingles. Even though these old cedar shake shingles were treated and held a fire rating, there have been enough instances where the roofing material has combusted to shadow this product in insecurities and has slowly taken stage right to far superior products in the market.
